On January 18, 2009 at 4:50 a.m., RCMP Snow Lake Detachment were advised by the Snow Lake Hospital of a serious snowmobile collision on Snow Lake, Manitoba.
RCMP learned that on January 18th between 12:30 a.m. and 1:00 a.m., a 16-year-old male resident of Snow Lake collided with jagged rocks on the west shore of Snow Lake across the lake from the community site. The young man was taken to the Snow Lake Hospital and medevaced to the Health Science Centre where he, on the evening of January 24th, succumbed to his injuries.
Although this youth was reported as a snowmobile enthusiast, RCMP investigation suggests excessive speed and poor visibility (darkness) were contributing factors. Alcohol may have also been a contributing factor.
The investigation continues.
The RCMP would like to remind riders that excessive speed, poor visibility and alcohol can be a deadly mix when riding a snowmobile. Please exercise caution and do not drink and ride.
