On July 3, 2010, at approx 1:20pm, Elphinstone RCMP with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team arrested a 35-year-male after he barricaded himself in a residence on Keeseekoowenin FN for more than 16 hours.
35-year-old Derek Gabriel Bone of Keeseekoowenin FN has been charged with a number of Criminal Code offences, including firearms offences, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, uttering threats and mischief. In addition to these charges, there were two outstanding warrants for arrest. He has been remanded in custody, and will be appearing in Brandon Provincial Court.
The incident began on July 1, 2010, when Mr. Bone allegedly threatened a resident on Keeseekoowenin FN and was also reported to be driving while impaired. Police located Mr. Bone driving a vehicle in the area, he fled from police, narrowly missing one of the members attempting to stop him. Mr. Bone abandoned his vehicle a short distance later and escaped into dense brush. On July 2, 2010, police attended his residence and attempted to arrest him. He again tried to flee from his residence on foot, but he returned to his house before police could capture him. One member observed the curtains of the residence open and a barrel of a gun pointing towards him.
Police contained the residence until the RCMP Emergency Response Team arrived and attempted to make contact with Mr. Bone. There were two other persons in the residence at the time and they departed the residence after several hours. Police were eventually able to make contact with Mr. Bone, who shortly thereafter exited the residence and was arrested. Emergency Response Members located a firearm in the residence.
