The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety and Member of Parliament for Provencher, was pleased to take part in a celebration in honour of the accomplishments of Chicago Blackhawks Captain Jonathan Toews, in Winnipeg on July 11th.
“While I was not the Toews everyone came to celebrate, I was very honoured to take part in the day,” said Minister Toews. “Jonathan’s achievements have made all Manitobans proud. It was very exciting to see this young Winnipegger share the experience of winning the Stanley Cup with thousands of us in his hometown with these celebrations.”
The celebration included a parade for Jonathan Toews through the St. Vital neighbourhood, and renaming of the Dakota Community Centre to the Jonathan Toews Community Centre. The Province of Manitoba also named a lake in honour of the 22-year-old hockey player.
“Jonathan’s play this season is an inspiration to all Manitobans, especially to the ranks of young hockey players in our province,” said Minister Toews. “Most young kids dream about lifting the Stanley Cup or winning an Olympic gold medal. Jonathan was able to accomplish both in the same year – plus being awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the NHL playoffs’ Most Valuable Player.”
“As his fame grows, I find that I am frequently asked if I am related to Jonathan Toews. While I can’t claim to be a relative of a talented hockey player, I do have to praise him for doing something I have struggled with in 15 years in public office: Canada suddenly knows how to correctly pronounce Toews,” concluded Minister Toews.
