Hot and humid conditions are forecast for all of southern Manitoba and parts of central Manitoba over the next few days with humidex values potentially rising close to 40. Manitoba Health is reminding Manitobans to take precautions to prevent heat-related illness.
Environment Canada forecasts predict the high heat and humidity values will start in the southwest area of the province including Melita and Boissevain tomorrow and move across southern Manitoba through Sunday and Monday. These conditions will range from the southwest corner of the province through Brandon, Carmen, Portage la Prairie, Winnipeg, the Morden-Winkler-Altona area and Steinbach. The Whiteshell region and Lake Winnipeg beaches will also be impacted.
Exposure to heat for too long a period can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, other serious illnesses or even death.
Health risks related to heat are higher for certain groups such as older adults, young children and people with chronic conditions; however, everyone is potentially at risk.
