On August 10, 2010, at approximately 4:45pm, RCMP members attempted to stop a black pick-up truck on Brokenhead FN for a routine check, when it was determined that the vehicle had been reported stolen from Winnipeg, MB.
Once police activated their emergency lights, the driver of the vehicle quickly fled the area westbound through the community in an effort to avoid apprehension. A brief pursuit ensued, but was quickly called off due to existing conditions. Subsequent investigation lead police to a remote wooded area in the community where the vehicle was eventually located.
RCMP resources from the Police Dog Section and both Grand Marais and Powerview Detachments were called in to assist in apprehending the occupants of the vehicle. A search of the area resulted in the arrest of 3 adults, 2 male and 1 female, for possession of goods obtained by crime. One of the subjects was identified as 30-year-old Leonard Desjarlais of Brokenhead FN. Desjarlais was found to have an outstanding Canada-wide warrant for his arrest for parole violation.
Desjarlais was remanded into custody and numerous charges are pending.
The investigation is continuing.
