On January 29, 2009 at about 5:20 p.m., Carberry RCMP and Fire were dispatched to a two vehicle collision. Police learned that a vehicle was rear-ended by another vehicle while traveling westbound near the Melbourne Road on Hwy 1.
RCMP attended the scene and initial reports indicated that the driver of the westbound 2004 Buick Century who rear-ended the westbound 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass, was driving at a high rate of speed prior to the collision.
The female driver in the Buick Century, a 32-year-old Brandon resident, had a valid learner’s licence. She along with a 30-year-old man from Winnipeg who was a passenger supervising her driving were arrested for impaired driving. Both the driver and passenger will be facing charges under the Highway Traffic Act and the Criminal Code of Canada. Neither the married couple from Brandon who were in the Oldsmobile, nor the 3 occupants in the Buick were injured in this collision. The speed limit in this area is 100 km per hour.
Police would like to remind the public, that even as a passenger, if you are intoxicated and supervising a novice driver, you can be charged with Care and Control of a motor vehicle, contrary to section 253 of the Criminal Code. When supervising a novice driver, you must be sober, alert and capable of intervening with the novice driver if necessary to ensure public safety on our roadways.
The investigation continues.
