RCMP are seeking public assistance in connection with numerous electrical wiring thefts over the past few months in the RM of North and South Cypress.
Between May 20 and August 25, 2010, Carberry RCMP Detachment received 6 complaints of theft of electrical wiring from farm pivots located in the RM of North and South Cypress. Suspects are believed to be targeting these pivots late at night and subsequently cut the wire several times in long lengths of 50 feet. In many cases, the wire is providing high voltage power to the pivot which supplies water for irrigation. The suspects are taking tremendous risks of death or severe injury to cut the wire while it is live. Six farms in the Carberry area have been targeted and the replacement value of the stolen wire is approximately $40,000.
It is speculated that the suspects are then transporting the wire to a location, melting the rubber off the wire, and cashing in the scrap copper at various scrap yards. Police are urging the public to contact Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-TIPS or the Carberry RCMP Detachment at 204-834-2905 with any information that might identify suspects or lead to arrests.
Police are also reminding rural residents to vigilantly report any suspicious persons traveling in your area.
These investigations are on going.
