On February 1, 2009 at about 3 p.m., Portage la Prairie RCMP Detachment with the Portage Emergency Medical Services and the Portage Fire Department responded to a 12 vehicle collision in the westbound lanes of Highway #1 and Highway #13.
In total, 5 semi tractors with trailers and 7 automobiles were involved. The injuries sustained by 6 individuals varied from minor to serious, but there were no fatalities.
All those injured in the collision were either treated at the scene or transported to the Portage General Hospital. Two of which were transferred from Portage General Hospital to the Health Sciences Centre. One has since been released and the other individual remains in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries. One person was admitted to Portage General Hospital where he remains in stable condition.
Traffic was re-directed from the westbound lane of Highway #1 to the Highway 430 then onto Highway #26. Eastbound traffic was not affected. At about 3:00 am this morning, the scene was clear from debris and traffic was restored.
Poor visibility and icy highway conditions are considered contributing factors. Alcohol is not considered a contributing factor.
The investigation continues.
Police would like to remind motorists to adjust their speed for the driving conditions.
