On September 13, 2010 at about 9:30am, Emerson RCMP as well as local Emergency Services, EMS, EMO and Manitoba Hydro Gas Division were dispatched to the scene of a broken gas line in the town of Emerson, Manitoba.

Investigation revealed that a gas line had been ruptured by an excavator working in a ditch on a residential street.

In order to ensure the safety of the local residents, a safety perimeter was immediately established and numerous buildings in the area were evacuated, including residences, two seniors homes and the Emerson School. All persons evacuated were directed to the community center for registration.

The leaking gas line was repaired by Manitoba Hydro Gas employees, who then conducted checks of the residence and buildings to ensure there was no gas present. The all clear was given just before 12pm noon and all persons were allowed back into the area.

There were no injuries reported, and no damages as a result of this incident. The cause of the gas line break is under investigation by Manitoba Hydro Gas Division.
