Manitoba Labour and Immigration advises the hourly minimum wage in Manitoba will increase by 50 cents to $9.50 an hour on Oct. 1, 2010.

On Dec. 31, 1999, Manitoba’s minimum wage was $6 per hour. With the latest increase, the minimum wage rate will have been increased by almost 60 per cent since 1999.

Minimum wage increases are examined by the Labour Management Review Committee on which both labour and management are represented.

The department said this increase will help approximately 28,000 Manitobans, many of whom are women and youth. With this increase, Manitoba will maintain its position near the middle of the minimum-wage rates among the other Canadian jurisdictions.

The new rate was announced earlier this year.
