The next generation of agriculture producers who are 4-H members will have the opportunity to learn more about livestock this weekend at two beef-cattle project workshops, Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Stan Struthers said.

“We are pleased to work with the young people in 4-H to help them gain hands-on experience and valuable skills in selecting, feeding and caring for livestock,” said Struthers. “MAFRI staff will provide current industry and business principals that these young people, who are our next generation of producers, can use when choosing, raising and marketing their animals.”

The minister noted that November is 4-H Month in Manitoba and a proclamation had been signed in recognition of this annual celebration.

The workshops will take place Saturday, Nov. 6, at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at the Keystone Centre in Brandon. 4-H beef members are also invited to join in the Manitoba Cattle Producers Association annual general meeting tomorrow and Saturday, also scheduled at the Keystone Centre during the 2010 Manitoba Livestock Expo, which is an event of the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba.

“The combination of these events provides an excellent opportunity for young people to learn more about livestock production and marketing from the experts and a chance to meet with producers and witness how the beef cattle industry is organized and operated,” said Struthers. “The future success of our rural communities will depend on the dedication, knowledge and skills of young Manitobans like those in 4-H. By providing learning opportunities like these workshops, we are building a strong foundation for growth and innovation in communities across the province.”

Manitoba’s youth have participated in 4-H clubs for over 90 years to build new skills and develop leadership abilities. There are more than 3,500 4-H members and leaders in Manitoba and about 85 per cent of them live on farms or in rural areas.
