RCMP have charged 58-year-old Harry Arend Bakema of East St. Paul, former Chief of Police of East St. Paul Police Service, with three offences under the Criminal Code.
Bakema has been charged with perjury, criminal breach of trust and obstruction of justice.
In September 2008, following a request by Manitoba Justice, the Major Crime Unit of RCMP āEā Division (British Columbia) conducted an investigation into allegations of criminal activity by former East St. Paul Police Service personnel. The investigation focused on the handling of a fatal traffic collision in 2005, which resulted in the death of Crystal Taman.
In September 2010, the RCMP āEā Division Major Crime Unit completed their investigation, which was forwarded to the Alberta Justice Department for review and charge approval.
Mr. Bakema has been served a summons and will be making his first court appearance on January 5, 2011 at 1pm in Winnipeg.
