“D” Division RCMP will begin their annual Holiday Check Stop Program on December 3, 2010 and will continue until midnight on January 2, 2011.

All RCMP detachments throughout Manitoba will take part in this initiative.

Each year in Manitoba there are fatal collisions in the province that are alcohol-related. So far this year Manitoba RCMP have responded to 58 fatal collisions that claimed 65 lives. Thirty-four per cent of these fatalities have been attributed to the use of alcohol and impaired driving.

“The Holiday Check Stop Program will focus on alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers, as well as drivers who fail to wear seatbelts, behaviors which continue to contribute to traffic deaths,” said Assistant Commissioner Bill Robinson, Commanding Officer of “D” Division RCMP. “The RCMP are committed to reducing the number of fatalities on our roadways. We’re asking the traveling public to do their part.”

The Holiday Check Stop Program is an initiative of Road Safety Vision 2010, which is dedicated to improving public safety on our roadways.
