The Member of Parliament for Palliser suggests the reestablishment of primary pork processing in Saskatchewan is an indicator that the province is open for business.
Last week the federal government announced a 1.7 million dollar investment to support Langley, B.C. based Donald’s Fine Foods in reestablishing federally inspected hog slaughtering capacity in Saskatchewan.
Donald’s expects to re-open its recently acquired Moose Jaw, pork processing plant in early 2011.
Palliser MP Ray Boughen says the money will be used to purchase new slaughter and meat processing equipment and allow the company to increase capacity.
We see a willingness of industry to get into the game as it were and to produce food that is one of our big exports.
Minister Ritz has been very busy in India and China looking at establishing markets so the whole thing kind of knits together as a good news story for the city of Moose Jaw, the province of Saskatchewan and certainly I would suggest the Canadian economy.
It’s going to bring together over 200 full time jobs in the plant with the possibility of further expansion as the plant reestablishes and starts to gain more market share.
The plant is going to be ultra modern.
It’ll have the latest strategies and techniques in place so that it’ll bode well for people in Moos Jaw finding employment and people from outside the city that will be doing something in the pork processing industry so it bodes well for, I think, local and regional and indeed dominion opportunities for marketing or pork.
Boughen says Saskatchewan is open for business and suggests the willingness of the industrial sector to invest in the local community speaks volumes for the province.
