At approximately 11:30am on February 15, 2011, Central Plains RCMP responded to report of a gas leak at the Canadian Tire located on Saskatchewan Ave. in Portage la Prairie.

The building had been evacuated before members arrived to the location. Portage Emergency Services arrived on the scene and the Fire Department was able to shut off the main gas valve until Manitoba Hydro arrived.

Investigation revealed that a build up of snow and ice had slid off the roof and broke a gas valve causing a leak in the Garden Centre.

The building remained evacuated for approximately 45 minutes until Manitoba Hydro deemed it safe for persons to re-enter.

There were no injuries reported.
