On February 9, 2009 around 3:00 PM Portage la Prairie RCMP, Portage Fire Department and Paramedics responded to a call of a collapsed structure on Mayfair Farms in Portage la Prairie.

The roof of one of the work buildings collapsed with early reports indicating there were approximately 10-15 workers inside. Four workers were trapped under the roof. PFD had to extract two of the workers out, another worker was able to get out on his own. The fourth worker who was trapped was pronounced deceased at the scene. Three workers were taken to Portage General Hospital to be treated for injuries. Two have been treated and released, the third is in stable condition.

The name of the deceased is not being released at this time pending notification of the next of kin.

The incident is still under investigation with the assistance of Workplace Health and Safety and the Office of the Fire Commissioner.  Early indications suggests the roof collapsed due to a build up of snow and ice.

Update 02/10/09 4:40pm

The third worker still remains in hospital in stable condition.  Workplace Safety and Health is on scene and the cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
