On February 21, 2011 at about 7:40pm, Virden RCMP received a report of horses that had been hit out on Highway 1.

The location of the incident was west of Hargrave, MB, about 14 km west of Virden.

Investigation revealed that 17 horses were at large with 6 being killed by a passing train and a further 4 being killed by semi-truck traffic on Highway 1. One injured horse was taken for medical care to a veterinarian.

The owner of the horses was in the area and was making efforts to locate his horses. The remaining horses have been located and rounded up.

How the horses came to be at large at this time is unclear with the investigation continuing.
