After a lengthy investigation, the “D” Division Historical Case Unit has made an arrest in the 2003 disappearance of Dauphin resident Derek James Kembel.
On March 10, 2003, the Dauphin RCMP Detachment received a report from Kembel’s family that 25-year-old Derek James Kembel was missing and had not been seen or heard from since February 28, 2003.
Kembel was last seen after leaving a Dauphin bar on the evening of February 28, 2003.
On Sunday, February 27, 2011, 29-year-old Christopher Robin Shewchuk of the RM of Mountain, Manitoba, was arrested and charged with first degree murder in connection with the disappearance of Derek James Kembel. Shewchuk is in custody and is to appear in Winnipeg court.
In addition, 60-year-old Thomas Ronald Shewchuk has been arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder. He is also in custody, and is to appear in Dauphin court.
Although his body has not been found, evidence gathered in the RCMP investigation supports that Christopher Robin Shewchuk is responsible for the death of Derek Kembel. Details surrounding Derek Kembel’s death will not be released at this time.
RCMP members are continuing the investigation.
