On February 10, 2009, after a four year long investigation which began with a complaint from Health Canada, the RCMP Winnipeg Commercial Crime Section (CCS) arrested and charged Daryl Joseph Cote (age 53) of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Cote was charged with two counts of theft over $5,000 and two counts of fraud over $5,000.
The charges allege that Daryl Cote, the former CEO of Anishinaabe Mino-Ayaawin Inc. and the former Co-Manager of the Dauphin River First
Nation, stole $717,900 from Anishinaabe Mino-Ayaawin Inc. between October 1, 1999 and March 31, 2004 and $310,150 from the Dauphin River First Nation between February 8, 2001 and February 28, 2004.
The total value of the thefts and frauds is $1,028,050.
The investigation is continuing.
Update 04/22/09 11:01am
On April 16, 2009, the RCMP Winnipeg Commercial Crime Section also charged David Traverse (age 45) of Kinonjeoshtegon (Jackhead) First
Nation in connection with this investigation. Traverse was charged with Theft over $5,000, Fraud over $5,000 and Breach of trust by a public official.
The charges allege that David Traverse, the Chief of Kinonjeoshtegon (Jackhead) First Nation, stole $16,000 from Anishinaabe Mino-Ayaawin Inc. between September 8, 2000 and October 30, 2000.
On April 21, 2009, Traverse was served a summons to appear in a Winnipeg court on May 22, 2009.
No further charges are contemplated.
