Schools throughout Manitoba received a portion of a $10,000 grant for special music projects and events in April as part of Celebrating Music in Manitoba Schools Month. This announcement was made by Education Minister Nancy Allan.
“Music education enriches students and gives them an opportunity to learn about different cultures and ways of life, as well as encouraging a lifelong appreciation for the arts,” Allan said. “The grants received by schools help to enhance regular music curriculum through special projects and activities throughout April.”
This year, Manitoba Education is also co-ordinating activities with the Coalition for Music Education in Canada by holding a concert on Music Monday on May 2. This national event is being showcased in Manitoba for the first time.
Celebrating Music in Manitoba Schools gives students and teachers the chance to work with professional musicians and share performances with their families and communities, said Allan.
This year, 545 students from across the province will perform instrumental music and songs at the Legislative Building between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on April 13, 19, 27 and May 2.
“Our strong appreciation of diversity in Manitoba extends to music from many different cultures,” Allan said. “The school and community concerts and projects held every year are interesting and exciting, and they unite people through a shared love of music. I want to encourage all Manitobans to support students as they share their musical interests and learn from talented professional musicians.”
