On April 5, 2011, The RCMP in Island Lake received a report of stranded motorists walking on the winter road approximately 200 km from the St. Theresa Point FN Community.
It was reported to police that a group of 5 adult males, all residents of St. Theresa Point, had left Winnipeg in their vehicle on Saturday and were en route to St. Theresa Point on the winter road.
Investigation revealed that the driver lost control of the vehicle on the winter road, hitting a tree. The travelers abandoned their damaged vehicle on the winter road to seek shelter.
The men spent two nights in an abandoned trailer, approximately 5 km from where they had left their vehicle. The overnight temperatures were reported to be in the -16 to -20 C. range. The trailer had a wood burning stove and the men used this to stay warm during their stay.
Island Lake RCMP obtained the services of a helicopter to make a patrol and located the men. They were transported to the nearby community of Berens River, where they were all reported to be in good spirits after their ordeal. None of the men required medical attention.
The winter road to St Theresa Point has been officially closed since March 25th, 2011.
