The Rural Municipality of De Salaberry will review a proposal which area residents delivered as a petition to oppose access to St. Malo Lake.

The petition contains 58 signatures against the proposal to provide public access to the St. Malo Lake. The petition opposes the St. Malo Local Urban District’s idea to open public lanes that lead directly to the lake.

The petition may be premature, as council has yet to receive an official request from the LUD for the expansion of these lanes, noted council.

However, there is a possibility that an upgrade to the current road allowances which enter the lake could be under consideration so they can be used as a boat launch or allow access to ice fishing shacks.

The municipality acknowledged receipt of the petition and plans to keep it on record in the event that it becomes relevant in further discussions.

Currently, direct access to the lake, which is within St. Malo Provincial Park, is limited to vehicles operated by Manitoba Conservation.
