Manitoba Homecoming 2010

Manitoba Homecoming 2010 announced it’s Celebrate Manitoba’s Birthday contest that will be bringing the province’s biggest bash to a rural town in May 2010.

“We’re challenging all communities, cities, and municipalities throughout the province to nominate their town and tell us why they should host Manitoba’s official 140th birthday party on May 12, 2010,” said Kevin Walters, Executive Director, Manitoba Homecoming 2010. “There’ll be the official cake cutting, birthday greetings and then a huge party to celebrate our province’s birthday in style. We’ll definitely be rocking the fairgrounds!”

The contest has officially kicked off on the Manitoba Homecoming 2010 website. People are being encouraged to send in a short essay, photo or video that demonstrates why their town should host the province’s birthday party. Entries will be received until Tuesday, March 31. At that time, a panel of judges will select the top five entries and post them on the Manitoba Homecoming website. From April 8th to May 8th, Manitobans will be encouraged to vote on-line and determine the winning location which will be announced on May 12, 2009.

The remaining top four entries will each receive a secondary prize which consists of a Manitoba Homecoming grant to be used towards an approved event in 2010 that will attract people to their community or town during the homecoming year.

“The Province of Manitoba is proud to be a partner in this initiative, and what better time and place to get the word out than the legendary Trappers’ Festival,” said The Honourable Eric Robinson, Minister of Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport and Acting Minister of Aboriginal and Northern Affairs. “We encourage all Manitobans to come on board and nominate their town. This is an excellent opportunity to promote where we live and show the world why our communities are so special.”
