The Norway House RCMP Detachment proudly completed their first ever RCMP Youth Academy this last week, doing their part in giving local area youth a first hand experience and understanding of the training involved to become a police officer.
This 6-day Youth Academy was held at the Helen Betty Osborne School in Norway House, Manitoba, and concluded Saturday night with an official graduation and badge presentation ceremony.
Among the honoured guests in attendance for the graduation ceremony where Grand Chief Ron Evans, Norway House Cree Nation Councillor Denis Day, Norway House Community Mayor Cristo Speiss, RCMP Assistant Commissioner Bill Robinson,(Commanding Officer for Manitoba), RCMP Chief Superintendent Mike Sekela, (Criminal Operations Officer for Manitoba), RCMP Superintendent Brenda Lucki, (Manitoba North District Commander), as well as many other invited guests.
The goal of this “RCMP Youth Academy” was to familiarize youth with the roles of a police officer as well as to expose cadets to some of the training, procedures and technology utilized by police officers. The Academy was designed to give local youth the opportunity to learn respect for the law by providing them with positive interaction during their attendance at the academy and to motivate young people to be outstanding citizens through law enforcement education. The Academy also focused much of their efforts on improving self-esteem, discipline, self-confidence and respect for fellow attendees as well as law enforcement. It also encouraged our young citizens to be partners in building safer schools and communities. The cadets, as leaders of tomorrow, were instilled with an appreciation and new-found respect for law enforcers and their role in society.
