The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety and Member of Parliament for Provencher, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, joined Kevin Lavallee, Reeve RM of Whitemouth, to officially open the new Whitemouth Water Treatment Plant.
“The Government of Canada is proud to contribute to this project, which will ensure community residents receive high-quality drinking water,” said Minister Toews. “The investment in this new water treatment plant has helped boost the rural economy through the construction phase and allowed for future development in the region.”
This $5-million project is funded equally by the governments of Canada and Manitoba through the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component, and the RM of Whitemouth.
Completion of this project means an improved regional water system for households and businesses in the area. The benefits are seen today, but also pave the way for the future.
The new water treatment plant involves a new water system designed to merge four existing smaller water systems. It will supply the existing system, as well as the Whitemouth Water Co-op, the Seven Sisters Water Co-op, and the Seven Sisters town site. The system has the capacity to expand to serve Elma, the RM of Reynolds, and the RM of Lac du Bonnet.
