On August 29, 2011, at about 5:30am, Berens River RCMP members were called and advised that the community Northern Store was on fire as well as the local Adult Education Building.
While locals attempted to control the fire, both structures and contents were completely destroyed. The buildings are located about 300 yards apart.
RCMP along with the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner are currently investigating. Police say that the fires are considered suspicious in nature and no one was injured.
Early damage estimates are pegged in the multi-million dollars.
