The Manitoba Beef Producers (MBP) congratulates Premier Selinger on the formation of a majority government in Manitoba.

Earlier in the election campaign MBP released a series of policy positions that will help drive investment into Manitoba and ensure the economic health and competitiveness of one of our province’s most important sectors. “Manitoba’s beef industry needs to see key policy decisions in areas like flood compensation, watershed management and TB eradication,” stated Major Jay Fox, President of the Manitoba Beef Producers.

Fox noted that many of these issues are critical to the preservation of Manitoba’s beef herd. “I know that there are producers making decisions today on the future of their farms. We hope to meet with the Premier and his re-constituted Cabinet as quickly as possible to iron out critical policy details.”

“In the past MBP has expressed concerns on the approach taken by the Selinger government, especially around environmental legislation and regulation. We hope to be able to work with the government to shift away from the use of regulations to more effective incentive-based programs that are founded on scientific research and consultations with producers”, stated Fox.

“MBP is confident that we can work with the Selinger government to quickly resolve outstanding issues and to continue to build on programs designed to stimulate the growth of our industry. Beef producers have reasons to be hopeful, after many difficult years of dealing with issues like BSE. Prices are strong and market access continues to increase. A government partner that is working with is towards our common goals is critical if these opportunities are going to be realized in Manitoba,” concluded Fox.
