On October 24, 2011, at 11:30pm, Swan River RCMP as well as local Emergency Services were dispatched to the scene of a fatal single vehicle collision on Highway 10 near the junction of PR 279, north of Swan River.
Initial investigation indicates that a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am was travelling north on Highway 10 when it left the roadway, rolling over at least once.
RCMP report that there were 4 occupants in the vehicle, an adult male and 3 females.
Two females, a 21-year-old woman and a 23-year-old woman from the Swan River area, were pronounced deceased at the scene.
A 25-year-old woman from Swan River was transported to hospital with undetermined injuries.
The driver, a 50-year-old man from Swan River, was transported to hospital with undetermined injuries. He was subsequently arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death.
The accused has since been released from custody. He is facing charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death (2 counts) and impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. He scheduled to appear in Swan River Provincial Court on December 21, 2011.
An RCMP Traffic Collision Analyst attended to assist with the investigation. The highway was closed for several hours in order to conduct the investigation.
Police say that alcohol and seat belt use are considered to be factors in this fatal collision.
Police continue to investigate.
