Manitoba Pork Council in partnership with Agra-Gold Consulting has released a new video which explains the concept behind swine manure injection and the techniques and technologies used.
“Manure Matters” a new video that outlines what swine manure injection is and explains the technologies and methods involved is being made available to the general public, representatives of government and stakeholders within the pork industry.
Mike Teillet, the Sustainable Development Manager with Manitoba Pork Council, notes while manure injection has been used for at least ten years it’s becoming more and more common.
The idea as I mentioned before was to try to show how injection works and one of the things that we were trying to get across and I think it comes across quite well in the video is how sophisticated this technology is.
They’re using autosteer GPS guided tractors, the use of computers to gauge flow, there’s soil testing done and it’s an extremely sophisticated process.
We believe that now 80 percent of producers in Manitoba are injecting.
It significantly cuts down on run-off and it’s one of the reasons they do it and it’s one of the things I think we were trying to get across to people was that, when manure is injected in the soil, it doesn’t run off.
Therefore the idea of manure getting into ditches and creeks and streams just doesn’t happen when you inject properly.
