The Honourable Vic Toews, Regional Minister for Manitoba and Member of Parliament for Provencher, welcomed news that CentrePort Canada Inc. has launched a pilot project to export 250 tonnes of soybeans from Manitoba to China by container.
The soybeans pilot project will utilize new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to ensure the security and quality of the shipment and to better move cargo from central Canada to inland and western China.
“Today’s event marks the first-ever shipment of Manitoba soybeans to inland China, which is welcome news for Manitoba agricultural producers,” said Minister Toews. “The new technology being used by CentrePort will enable the opening of new markets and the creation of new opportunities for agricultural producers in Manitoba and across Canada.”
CentrePort’s new cargo security and tracking system uses RFID technology which was invented by Invent IOT Technology. The system involves an RFID tag being placed on the container as it is locked as well as a RFID label being placed on each package within the container to ensure the integrity of the cargo from shipper to consumer. The RFIP tag system contains identifying information which is read at origin and destination and which must match in order to be verified.
The system was first showcased in February 2012 in Chongqing during Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s trade mission to China.
