On behalf of its new smartphone customers in the province TELUS is donating $49,000 to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation for clinical trials that help fight cancer in children.
From March through May last year, TELUS announced it would donate $25 to CancerCare Manitoba on behalf of every new smartphone customer.
“CancerCare Manitoba Foundation is proud to support over 48 per cent of all pediatric clinical trials that take place at CancerCare Manitoba,” said Annitta Stenning, Executive Director of CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. “We are so grateful for the generosity of TELUS. Their financial support will be making a significant difference in cancer care and treatment for children with cancer and their families. We cannot do it alone, but together we can.”
Clinical trials have had an impressive effect in saving children’s lives over the past 40 years. Five year pediatric cancer survival rates have risen to 82 per cent, compared to10 per cent in the 1970s. Patient quality of life has improved dramatically as well. For kids and their families in the fight of their life, the possibility of staying in Manitoba while undergoing treatment makes such a difference, not only in terms of financial costs, but also the positive psychological impact of being near family, friends and familiar surroundings.
“Our family’s world changed forever when our seven year old son was diagnosed with leukemia and I remember the toll it took on his body, mind and spirit,” said Jane Hantscher. “Although the past three years were heart wrenching, we could not have imagined going through it without the amazing support at CancerCare Manitoba. We cannot thank CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, and companies like TELUS, enough for raising funds for clinical trials that support kids like our son.” TELUS has been a long-time supporter of charities that advance cancer research, awareness and detection. Since 2000, TELUS, its team members and retirees have contributed $15 million toward finding a cure for cancer, and continue to raise funds and awareness for early detection.
“Cancer affects everyone. TELUS’ goal was to mobilize the community and work with our customers to make a difference in the lives of children in Manitoba who are fighting this disease,” said Winnipeg’s Wally Schmeichel, manager of TELUS Enterprise Sales. “On behalf of TELUS and our customers, we are proud to present CancerCare Manitoba with $49,000 to help them provide even better care for pediatric cancer patients in our community.”
In addition to CancerCare Manitoba, TELUS has also proudly supported the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Rethink Breast Cancer, the Canadian Cancer Society, Ovarian Cancer Canada, Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation, Saskatchewan Cancer Agency and the BC Cancer Foundation.
