Ten anti-tobacco videos created by students, including a submission by the Steinbach Junior High, have been selected as finalists in the province’s Create and Rate anti-tobacco video contest. This announcement was made by Healthy Living, Seniors and Consumer Affairs Minister Jim Rondeau.
“Create and Rate is Manitoba’s first student-produced, anti-tobacco video program and it has given students across the province the opportunity to develop videos to discourage other youth from using tobacco,” said Rondeau. “If someone doesn’t smoke when they’re young, their risk of becoming addicted is dramatically reduced. We believe these videos will encourage peer-to-peer communication and help youth learn about the health benefits of being smoke-free.”
The ten finalists in the video competition are:
• Tackle Smoking by École Provencher (Grade 6);
• No Smoking by Gypsumville School (Grade 6);
• Birthday Cake by Steinbach Junior High (Grade 8);
• Les recompenses d’arreter by Collège Beliveau (grades 7 to 8);
• Dans une cigarette by Collège Beliveau (grades 7 to 8);
• Think Twice by Kildonan-East Collegiate (grades 9 to 12);
• Fume rest une addiction by Centre scolaire Leo-Rémillard (Grade 10);
• How much time do you have? by College Sturgeon Heights Collegiate (Grade 11);
• Lungs by Morris School (Grade 9); and
• Stop Smoking by Morris School (Grade 9).
The ads are now posted online at www.mbcreaterate.ca and all Manitoba students in grades 5 to 12 can vote for the ad they like best.
The middle-school entry and the high-school entry that receive the most online votes will each receive an Apple iPad. A Sony digital camera will be awarded to each of the eight runner-up entries.
Voting closes on May 25 and the winning videos will be announced on World No Tobacco Day on May 31.
