On May 5, 2012, shortly after 7pm, Thompson Rural RCMP Detachment was dispatched to Provincial Road 280, about 30 km south from Split Lake Cree Nation, where a 14-year-old male had been reportedly shot. Police say that the incident happened while the youth was in a canoe with a 23-year-old man from Split Lake.
RCMP continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Early reports suggest that the pair were returning from duck hunting when a firearm discharged, striking the youth, at which time the canoe capsized in shallow water near the shore.
Police say that both occupants were able to make their way to shore and out of the bush by an ATV. Two Split Lake Paramedics, who happened to be in the area, transported the victim to the local nursing station. The victim has since been transported to Winnipeg for treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
Thompson RCMP continues to investigation assisted by Major Crime Services and the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team.
