“D” Division RCMP members continued to target High Risk Drivers during Canada Road Safety Week, a national enforcement campaign corresponding with the May long weekend, designed to target those who choose to drive impaired, and fail to obey traffic safety laws. The 2012 campaign ran from May 14th to May 21st this year.
As a result of the campaign, RCMP charged people with:
• 50 x Criminal Code impaired driving offences (Impaired, Over .08, Refusal)
• 5 x 24-hour alcohol related roadside suspensions
• 87 x failing to wear their seatbelts
• 13 x distracted driving (cell phones)
• 589 x speed/aggressive driving
• 32 x fail to stop at intersections
• 24 x drive while Prohibited/Suspended
• 8 x other CC driving offences
• 227 x other Highway Traffic Act/Liquor Control Act offences
There was one fatality in RCMP jurisdiction during the week-long campaign.
The highest speed recorded was on Saturday, May 19th – a 19 year old male was stopped on Highway 1 just east of Portage la Prairie for driving 182 km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone – the driver could be subject to a three-month driving suspension in conjunction with his $1092.50 speeding ticket.
During the 2011 campaign, RCMP charged motorists with the following:
• 72 x Criminal Code impaired driving offences
• 20 x 24-hour alcohol related roadside suspensions
• 100 x failing to wear their seatbelts
• 7 x distracted driving (cell phones)
• 781 x speed and other Highway Traffic Act offences
During the 2011 Road Safety Week campaign, there were two deaths as a result of two separate collisions, one of which was alcohol related.
