The 2012 Summer in the City Festival committee is counting down the final days to the start of another great event in Steinbach, Manitoba.
On June 5, the Summer in the City Festival Committee will be holding the final “dress rehearsal” for the weekend. Chair Keith Unger says, “This is the day we run through the timeline with all committee members to make sure that every piece has fallen into place. We’ve spent months planning, and now it’s go-time. Thursday (June 14) the stage goes up and then the show begins. All that’s left really is to sell the tickets and bring the people”.
Ticket sales are doing very well, so well in fact that the VIP tickets for Saturday night’s show with Burton Cummings and Band is sold out. Good crowds are expected for both Friday and Saturday night. The gates will open at 6pm, with the headliners (DOC Walker and Burton Cummings) taking the stage around 9. The headliners are a big part of the weekend, but the committee will never lose sight of the focus they’ve had since the first year of the summer in the City Festival – arts, culture and local performers. Jason Kirkness is one of those local performers (on stage Friday night) and he had this to say when asked about the Festival, “Summer in the City is a great event on par with any event across Western Canada. Playing such a well organized mainstage has been a great experience in past years and has given me the confidence to go on to play other huge stages across the West where I don’t have the benefit of a hugely supportive hometown crowd. An event like this fosters growth in our small town talent by providing a great venue for new acts while hosting great entertainment from national headliners for the community. It’s great that Steinbach can be a leading community in this type of festival/community event.”
Volunteers are still needed for the June 15/16 weekend. As the Summer in the City Festival continues to grow, so does the demand for community-minded volunteers. Interested groups or individuals can contact volunteer co-coordinator Rita Winter. The 2012 Summer in the City Festival is only 2 weeks away. It’s the fourth year that Steinbach is inviting the entire Southeast to enjoy the fun. Returning are favourites, the WonderShows Midway, children’s activities and Friday night Show ‘n Shine. And new for this year is a Cultures in the City tent and Artist Courtyard.
