The Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) recognizes four Manitoba educators, including a Grunthal school teacher, with its Global Citizenship Award.
This year, MCIC launched the Global Citizenship Award for Educators to recognize Manitoba teachers and administrators, nominated by their peers and students, who are leaders in promoting and supporting active global citizenship. These educators have gone the extra mile to educate young Manitobans about global issues and empower them to take action to improve the lives of children, youth, people with disabilities and those living in poverty within and beyond our borders.
Jennifer Lehman a teacher at Green Valley School in Grunthal was one of this year’s winners.
Mrs. Lehman initiated a Social Justice Club at Green Valley School, which has helped to establish a food bank, started a student breakfast program, fundraised for a village in Kenya adopted through Free the Children and has led professional development workshops for the division on sustainable development and global citizenship.
According to Jasmine Wiens, a Grade 12 student at Green Valley School, “Mrs. Lehman has helped students in our school learn about issues and become passionate about helping others. Her efforts have empowered youth and challenged apathy. This will last beyond her students’ high school years.”
The other three recipients of the award are Paul Cuthbert, the Superintendent of Evergreen School Division; Naomi Harley, a Grade 5/6 Teacher at Centennial School and Lois McGill-Horn, the principal of Senior School and Humanities teacher at Balmoral Hall. The recipients received a donation for a charitable organization of their choice as well as recognition at MCIC’s Annual General Meeting on June 13, 2012 and at their respective schools.
The Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) is a coalition of over 40 organizations involved in international development. An independent non-profit organization, MCIC is responsible for distributing Government of Manitoba funds designated for international development and emergency relief and rehabilitation and works within Manitoba to build understanding and engagement on international issues.
