On March 15, 2009 at about 6 p.m., the RCMP St. Theresa Point was notified that on March 14th between 11 and 12 p.m. an off-duty Band Constable of the Community of St. Theresa Point entered the RCMP cell facility and assaulted an on-duty Matron and forcibly confined her in the RCMP guardroom.
As a result of this incident, the 22-year-old Matron suffered minor injuries. She was examined at the local Nursing Station and released.
Subsequent investigation revealed that additionally, on February 14th and March 10, 2009, the local Band Constable had similarly assaulted and unlawfully confined the same Matron while both were on-duty.
On March 16, 2009 at 2:45 a.m., 23-year-old Duane Mark Flett was arrested and subsequently released on a Promise to Appear with Undertaking with conditions including not to have any contact or communications with the Matron. On March 31, 2009, he was formerly charged with two counts of Assault with a Weapon, two counts of Unlawful Confinement and one count of Assault.
Duane Mark Flett is scheduled to appear in Court on June 17, 2009 in St. Theresa Point. He became a Provincially appointed Band Constable on February 27, 2009.
