On August 15, 2012, at about 4am, Norway House RCMP Detachment and local EMS were dispatched to a possible drowning on the Nelson River system on Little Playgreen Lake.
RCMP learned that four individuals were on board a canoe when it capsized in the waves. Three individuals were able to swim to shore while an 18-year-old Norway House man, reported as a non-swimmer, was not.
An RCMP officer and a local Band Constable boated to the location. The 18-year-old Norway House man was located submerged under water. He was brought back to shore where efforts to resuscitate him by local EMS were unsuccessful.
Life jackets were not being worn by the occupants of the canoe. Police say that alcohol has not been ruled out as a contributing factor and foul play is not suspected.
