After an independent investigation, a former Ste. Anne police officer is now facing criminal charges in relation to firearm conduct.
On January 18, 2012, Manitoba’s Director of Policing requested that the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) conduct an independent investigation into the actions of a police officer with the Ste. Anne Police Department.
The ASIRT investigators’ report was sent to independent crown counsel in Manitoba for review. After considering the completed report and crown opinion, the ASIRT Executive Director has determined that one officer from the Ste. Anne Police Department should be charged criminally in relation to his conduct. This officer has since resigned from the Ste. Anne Police Department.
On November 21, 2012, ASIRT investigators operating in Manitoba, charged Randy Chudyk, a former Sergeant with the Ste. Anne Police Department, with one count of careless use of a firearm contrary to section 86 of the Criminal Code and one count of pointing a firearm contrary to section 87 of the Criminal Code. The firearm in this incident was a conducted energy weapon. His first court appearance is on January 10, 2013 in Steinbach, Manitoba.
ASIRT is an independent body led by a civilian director with the mandate to investigate incidents or complaints involving serious injury or death, and matters of a serious or sensitive nature that may have resulted from the actions of a police officer.
