Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Excellence in Sustainability Awards including, for the first time, a sustainable community award. This announcement was made by Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh.
“Manitobans are actively engaged in sustainable development initiatives that benefit our province, economy and residents,” said Mackintosh. “This is an excellent opportunity to recognize and honour individuals, groups and organizations that are contributing to a sustainable future for Manitoba.”
Any individual, business, organization or community group in Manitoba is eligible to apply or be nominated for one award in the following categories:
• action on climate change, air quality and energy efficiency;
• sustainability in water and natural area stewardship;
• sustainability in pollution prevention and product stewardship;
• education for sustainability;
• innovation and research for sustainability; and
• champion for sustainability.
In addition, a new sustainable community award is being introduced this year to recognize communities engaged in innovative efforts to implement sustainable development practices.
“Communities across Manitoba taking active steps to increase sustainability are encouraged to apply,” said Mackintosh. “This new award category is consistent with the TomorrowNow – Manitoba’s Green Plan goal of mobilizing Manitobans so we all do our part for a better tomorrow.”
The Manitoba Round Table for Sustainable Development may also select a 2012 outstanding achievement in sustainability winner. Last year, the award was presented to The Marquis Project, a community-based, non-profit organization that educates Manitobans on economic, political and social issues at local and global levels. The Marquis Project actively participates in sustainable projects and partnerships to improve the quality of life in small, rural communities in developing countries.
The deadline for nominations and applications is noon, Friday, Feb. 1.

The Manitoba Round Table for Sustainable Development is an advisory board that provides advice and support to the Manitoba government about responsible resource management and land use, and environmental, social and economic development.
The round table established the awards program in 2008 to showcase individual and collective efforts that incorporate the positive impact of decisions and actions on the environment, the economy, and human health and well-being.
