The Manitoba RCMP 2012/13 Holiday Checkstop Program kicks off today and will continue through Wednesday, January 2, 2013.
This high-visibility campaign will focus on the detection of high-risk drivers, which includes drivers who are impaired, not wearing seatbelts, speeding, or using hand-held devices.
“The Holiday Checkstop program is about both enforcement and awareness,” said Assistant Commissioner Kevin Brosseau, Commanding Officer of RCMP “D” Division. “The RCMP is committed to eliminating impaired driving, and the tragedies that are all too often associated with this high-risk behaviour.”
“Drinking and driving is not acceptable,” said Justice Minister Andrew Swan. “Motorists need to remember to stay safe and make smart decisions behind the wheel, and not drinking and driving is one of those decisions. The RCMP’s Checkstop program is a reminder to all Manitobans that we want our roads accident-free so everyone can enjoy the holidays”
So far this year, there have been 76 fatal collisions resulting in 84 deaths in Manitoba RCMP jurisdiction. Thirty-nine of the 83 deaths are attributed to impaired driving.
All detachments and traffic units in “D” Division will be taking part in the campaign through extra Checkstops and patrols around the province. During last year’s campaign, Manitoba RCMP members checked more than 20,000 vehicles, and charged 141 people with Criminal Code Impaired Driving offences during the holiday season.
The RCMP wishes everyone and safe and happy holiday season, and would like to remind motorists that impaired driving is completely preventable.
