At 1:00am on April 16, 2009, Oakbank RCMP received a call regarding a motor vehicle collision on the #1 highway just east of the intersection of PR207.
The collision involved two semi trailer units. The report indicated that a tractor trailer unit was stopped at the lights when it was struck by another tractor trailer unit from behind. One of the trucks caught on fire and an explosion was heard a short time later. One of the trucks was transporting dangerous goods.
Oakbank RCMP are continuing their investigation.

RCMP Oakbank Detachment continue their investigation, assisted by the RCMP Traffic Reconstructionist, the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner and Manitoba Conservation, into this collision.
At present alcohol has been ruled out. It has been determined that the two Semi’s were traveling westbound when the semi at the front was slowing down in anticipation of the red light when he was rear-ended by the second semi following behind him who was carrying cleaning chemicals.
On impact, the trucks caught on fire and an explosion occurred. The fire was as a result of the impact. No chemicals leaked out of the truck. The scene was managed with the assistance of the Department of Highways, R.M. of Springfield Fire and Rescue. The two occupants of the Semi truck carrying dangerous goods, a 58-year-old and his adult female passenger both from Ontario were taken to Hospital by ambulance with minor, non-life threatening injuries.
Extensive damage resulted to the two Semi Tractor Trailer Units. The matter remains under investigation, however, alcohol has been ruled out as a contributing factor.
The investigation is continuing. No charges have been laid as of yet.
