Steinbach RCMP are warning residents of Steinbach and nearby rural municipalities of a recent telephone phishing scam.
On August 14, 2013, Steinbach RCMP received several complaints of an East Indian male calling residents to inform them that they had won a free trip from a local business. The caller requested credit card information from residents and ended the calls when they refused. Several local Steinbach phone numbers appeared on call display in an attempt to make the calls look more legitimate.
Steinbach RCMP are advising that this is a scam and to report it to police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center if you become a victim.
Steinbach RCMP are reminding the public to use caution when providing credit card information over the phone.
