With the last long weekend of summer approaching motorists are gearing up for what can potentially be the last chance for a summer getaway.

RCMP are reminding motorists to make smart driving decisions and to plan ahead for your trips.

If you are planning on a trip for the long weekend make sure to plan out your route in advance. Even if you are staying close to home, there could be construction zones and/or road closures that could cause delay. In order to reduce distractions while behind the wheel, check your route on a map or GPS before you leave. If you are planning a long drive make sure you get plenty of rest before hand and look for regular rest stops on your trip.

Before you head out on a road trip make sure your vehicle is up for the drive. Check all fluids to ensure they are all at the appropriate levels. Make sure that all the lights are working, and that the tires are properly inflated.

Remember to have everyone in the vehicle buckle up. Never underestimate the benefit of a seatbelt. It is a simple effective safety precaution to take while traveling in a vehicle.

When on the roadways, be cognizant of other drivers and keep a safe distance. Don’t drive too close in case of sudden stops. Remember to watch for other vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians.

Always practice being a responsible driver. Don’t drink and drive. If needed, have a designated driver. If you need to use your cell phone, either use a blue tooth or find a safe place to pull over before making or answering a call or before reading or sending a text.

The travel conditions may vary while you are traveling to your destination. Make sure to pack snacks and bottles of water. To aid in ensuring a safe and comfortable journey, it is important that you and whomever you are traveling with remain satisfied and hydrated.

RCMP are encouraging all to travel safe and enjoy the long weekend.
