Communities, schools, organizations, coalitions, and community partnerships throughout South Eastman are once again invited to apply for StartFresh! project funding to promote smoking cessation, physical activity and healthy eating initiatives and projects at the local level.
Start Fresh! is part of the provincial Chronic Disease Prevention Initiative (CDPI) to support communities in addressing lifestyle issues and habits that increase the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart, lung and kidney disease.
Start Fresh! is accepting funding proposals up to June 8, 2009 for projects requiring $500 to $2,000 in funding. However, large projects up to $5,000 will be considered.
Projects must meet the following criteria:
• Be initiated and led by the community or community group
• Be evidence-based
• Add value to existing programs and services
• Lever other financial and in-kind resources
• Identify goals and expected outcomes in the areas of healthy eating, physical activity and/or reduction in smoking.
As well, funding priority will be given to:
• New projects/activities not yet tried or implemented in the South Eastman region.
• Projects sponsored by first-time applicants that reach new population groups, or that significantly expand existing projects.
• Projects that directly address at least one of the three priority areas: smoking cessation, physical activity, and healthy eating (addressing more than one topic will be considered an asset).
• Projects that represent broadly-based community partnerships.
• Past-funded groups wanting to expand on their program by addressing another one of the three CDPI topics (healthy eating, physical activity, smoking cessation).
In its last intake, 13 locally led projects from 9 communities across the South Eastman region received almost $20,000 in total funding.
Since its inception in 2006, StartFresh! has invested more than $110,000 in projects throughout South Eastman.
Deadline for applications is June 8, 2009 with funds approved and distributed in July 2009. For further information, please contact Madeleine Sarrasin, CDPI Lead at 346-6348 or by email at startfresh@sehealth.mb.ca.
