It may not be everyone’s idea of the “best Christmas gift,” but Steinbach’s Solid Waste Department Head, Eldon Wallman, is very excited about it.

Mid December will see the completion of the City of Steinbach’s first Hazardous Waste Collection Depot at the Steinbach Landfill. The building, a simple sheet metal structure, is being constructed by City staff. Stocked with pallets, drums, and other containers, the Hazardous Waste Depot will be available year-round for members of the public to properly and safely dispose of hazardous waste.

Previously, the City of Steinbach, together with Miller Environmental, would schedule one day every year for members of the public to bring these items to the Steinbach Firehall. Now, Miller Environmental will come to safely transport and dispose of the hazardous items whenever the City’s depot is full.

“This arrangement will be much more convenient for everyone involved,” said Wallman. “It’s a good thing to be able to provide residents of Steinbach and the surrounding area with this worthwhile service.”

The Hazardous Waste Depot is tentatively set to be open every week, Tuesdays through Saturdays. The project, initiated by Product Care Incorporated out of Surrey, British Columbia, is funded through Green Manitoba.
