Cargill recently announced that it has reached an agreement with New Generation Pork Finishing Inc. (NG) to buy Cargill’s Swift Current, Saskatchewan feed mill and property. Officials from both companies anticipate that the sale will close by May 15, 2009.
According to NG officials, the addition of the Swift Current feed mill facility complements its separate acquisition of hog facilities in the area to position NG as an efficient producer of pork in Saskatchewan. “We are very pleased to be able to invest in these opportunities, as they will help us promote and advance pork production in this region,” said Dickson Gould, an officer of New Generation. “Moreover, with the populating of the hog finishing barns, new jobs have and will continue to be brought to the Swift Current and southwest Saskatchewan area in a time when many positions in the industry are being reduced or eliminated.”
Under the purchase agreement, Cargill will provide feed mill management services to support the ongoing operations of the Swift Current mill. “We feel that the relationship and agreements with New Generation Pork Finishing will allow us to ensure a more sustainable footprint in the Swift Current area, provide continued employment for our valued team, and maintain our ability to serve our customers in the province through the development of manufacturing capabilities in North Battleford, Saskatchewan,” said Phil Graham, general manager for Cargill Animal Nutrition’s western Canada business. “Cargill’s commitment to western Canada’s livestock industry is enduring and robust, as demonstrated by these actions,” he added.
