Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship reports thousands of reservations were made at Birds Hill campground and for cabins, yurts and group-use sites around the province through the Manitoba Parks Reservation Service on opening day.
This year, the Parks Reservation Service opened at 7 a.m. and 5,300 reservations were accepted including:
- 1,381 for yurts,
- 256 for group-use sites,
- 669 for cabins, and
- 3,008 for campsites at Birds Hill.
This is the first year the service has included Birds Hill campground in the opening day for cabins, yurts and group-use sites, and no major problems were reported. Ninety-eight per cent of reservations this morning were made online.
Reservations for all other provincial campgrounds open April 7 at 7 a.m.
Most campgrounds will open May 9 while northern campgrounds and, weather permitting, those along the lakes will open May 16. Information on specific campgrounds’ opening dates can be found online.
The May long weekend will be liquor free in all provincial parks and some liquor-free campsites will be available all season in designated spots at Grand Beach and Birds Hill provincial parks. The sites are:
- bays six, nine and 10 at Grand Beach Provincial Park; and
- Oriole and Grackle bays at Birds Hill Provincial Park.
Manitoba parks saw 5.4 million visitors in 2013. Over 66,000 camping reservations were made and 81 per cent of those were made online.
