Manitoba RCMP will be hitting the streets to target high-risk driving behaviours during Canada Road Safety Week May 13 to May 19, 2014. RCMP will be targeting the big four issues on Manitoba roadways: impaired driving, seatbelt use, distracted driving and speed/aggressive driving.

A small decision can have great consequences. Choosing to drink before getting behind the wheel impairs judgement and far too often results in collisions and fatalities. Seatbelts are proven to save lives. Choosing to wear a seatbelt keeps occupants from being ejected during a vehicle rollover and stops them from being smashed into the dash or the windshield. Choosing to focus on the road instead of your phone or the radio helps drivers avoid hazards and stay on the roadway. Choosing to speed means increasing the chance of a collision. Speeding is often one of the top three factors in fatal collisions. The speed of a vehicle is directly related to the force of impact and the severity of injuries.

RCMP will never stop trying to make Canadian streets safer. Canada Road Safety Week is an annual effort by Canadian police services from across the country to increase enforcement around high-risk driving behaviours. It is one of the tools police use to help educate drivers about making safe and smart decisions on the road.

During Canada Road Safety Week, and all year long, please make smart choices. Your family will thank you for it.
