Multiple award winner and Manitoba born Tom Cochrane will headline Steinbach’s first Summer in the City Festival June 19-21, 2009. Cochrane along with Red Rider take the stage Saturday night as part of the weekend downtown festival.
Cochrane, a Canadian rock icon originally from Lynn Lake, has been making music since he was 11 years old when he swapped his toy train set for his first guitar. Over the years singer/songwriter Cochrane, who fronted the band Red Rider, has received seven Juno Awards, six SOCAN awards, and has been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Cochrane also became an officer of the Order of Canada in 2007. In addition to numerous albums and popular hits including “Boy Inside the Man”, “Sinking Like a Sunset”, and the ever popular “Life is a Highway”, the Canadian rock legend’s most recent album No Stranger is fresh and classically Cochrane.
Festival Committee Chair Mary Jane Hiebert conveyed the city’s excitement of having a Canadian rock icon headlining Steinbach’s first-ever downtown street festival.
”On behalf of the Summer in the City Festival Committee, we are very pleased to be able to make this announcement here today”.
Cochrane is just one of the many performers set to play on the downtown stage. Festival go-ers will also enjoy performances by a range of musicians and other performers including local artists such as Sweet Water Creek, Jammin’ Sam, Katelyn Dawn, “Elvis” (Corny Rempel), Mr. Mark’s Family Show, Auto City Jazz Band, and various cultural dance troupes, to name a few. There will also be a Friday night social featuring Free Ride to help support the Steinbach Senior Huskies.
The festival will also feature a variety of cultural dishes and carnival food favourites in the Festival of Food, while local artists and artisans will be featured in the Artisans and Crafters Market, and local farmers and producers will be present in the Farmers’ Market on Saturday. Sunday will include a worship service as well as a mini ‘n’ shine car show put on by the local Lions Club.
The entire city is coming together for this first-time event and Hiebert notes the importance of this support along with the sponsorships by local businesses.
“We are very appreciative for the City’s efforts and to those of the sponsors who have placed their confidence in this fantastic event”.
Steinbach’s Annual Sidewalk Sale Days are also taking place the same weekend, which will allow visitors to park the car, walk the sidewalk and take in the deals while sampling great food from local restaurants and vendors while enjoying the rest of the event’s weekend festivities.
With one month to go until the festivities begin, Hiebert adds that sponsorship opportunities are still available and any interested sponsors are encouraged to contact the festival office.
